It was fun to draw these small fancy klompen in 20 min. Pen on ecru sketch paper, approx. 4" x 6". Love the folk art decorative flowers and windmills on these! They are brightly colored as well, but I'll leave the color for next time.
Can't go wrong with something simple and classic like an apple in 20 min. Pencil, watercolor, and water soluble pencils, approx. 6" x 9". I love complementary colors, esp. red and green, and when found in nature, even better. I really enjoyed doing this one and the time flew by.
A relatively unsatisfying 20 min. sketch here. Charcoal pencil on 5 1/2" x 8 1/2" sketch paper. This was the first time I was looking at the timer wondering what else could I add to fulfill the 20 min. requirement? It probably took me 15 min. Next time I attempt a subject like this will be in color, with a more challenging (and interesting) composition, so that I have plenty to do in the timeframe.
To follow up the previous food-related post, here is an example of a finished food illustration that I painted several years ago. Pencil, pen, and watercolor, 5" x 8 1/2" on sketchbook paper (though not watercolor paper, hence the wrinkles). Usually, I sketch the food in pencil as it is served to us, to the amusement of the waiter or waitress. It is a good motivation to sketch quick - as you're hungry and the food is tempting to eat immediately. When I paint the drawn image at a later time, it's a wonderful memory of the meal!
I baked for hours today and still had the recipes in my head (and the delightful smells in the house) when I sat down to paint.... Though food and menu illustrations of this sort are what I draw the most often, this is the first one with a time limit. Pen and watercolor, approx. 6" x 9". Normally I draw the items in pencil, and approximately to scale with each other, but for the sake of time I skipped that step. Those appear to be some big eggs! Rest assured, the real recipe turned out just fine.
Can make a big difference! Some may consider it "cheating" (I don't), but I really wanted to go back into yesterday's painting again. I spent another 20 min. on it and am pretty pleased with the more saturated color and definition achieved. Another 20 minutes to add a background and more flower detail would probably result in what I would consider a complete painting. But I feel like I should leave it alone now so I'll trust that feeling.
Well, foiled again by the 20 min. timeframe. Pencil, pen and watercolor, approx. 6" x 9". I was inspired to draw an urn shape, then it needed flowers in it, so I added the flowers and got carried away with the drawing before I added color. I am considering going back to this painting for another 20 min... whether that's cheating or not- I feel this painting has potential and I'd like to see what another 20 min. could do.
