Fancy Cupcake

Tonight's 20 minute sketch is of one of those fancy cupcakes that still seem to be so popular. Even though I think the "cupcake trend" is long over, bake shops don't give up so easily.
I would prefer to have a regular slice of cake. Slices have layers, with less frosting and more filling. Bakery frosting is always too sweet and heavy (except for a cupcake shop in NYC we tried once and then went out of our way on return visits to enjoy... so-so cake but the best cake frosting ever, probably made from 99% butter and 1% sugar). Since I enjoy baking and creating delicious cakes the way I prefer, I don't often sample bakery cakes. But they are fun to paint. Watercolor, 5 1/2" x 8".

Lazy Dogs

I admit I've drawn a similar picture to this before but really this is pretty much what the dogs do all day. What a rough life, right? Pen, 5" x 7".

Yellow Summer Flower

Today was a rainy and somewhat dreary summer day, but this yellow flower painted in 20 minutes is full of cheer and hope that tomorrow will be sunny. Pen and watercolor, 5" x 7".

With the candlestick...

I enjoy painting shapes and reflections in shiny or glass objects. From the work of other artists, I know they agree, shine and reflections are a fun challenge. The bottom of this small brass candlestick had some unique shapes to it. I am happy with the paint effects here in 20 minutes, some of it was intended and other spots a happy accident (quite often with watercolor). 5" x 7".

Wild Summer Berries

While enjoying the beautiful scenery of the Finger Lakes recently, I did this painting of some wild blackberries that grow all over that area. Even though this was not one of my regular 20 minute sketches, I estimate it probably took about 30-40 minutes to paint. That little bit of extra time was put to use developing rich saturated colors, which just makes those lovely berries "pop." Watercolor, approx. 5 1/2" x 8".

Bird Offering

Having read several weird antique fairytales lately, I seem to have been compelled to illustrate one - that to my knowledge doesn't yet exist. If any creative minds out there want to give it a shot I'd be more than happy to post it. I have a slight idea about it but really the image kept drawing itself for 20 minutes tonight. Pen, approx. 5" x 5".

Rainbow Sherbet

Hot summer days and nights call for something cold and refreshing like this little dish of rainbow sherbet. Love the colors here, tried to accurately capture the feeling of this in the short 20 minute timeframe! Colored pencil, approx. 4" x 6".
