Compass rosette

A compass is great. So many possibilities of design from a single tool. Pencil, pen, and watercolor, approx. 4" square. The spring and Easter theme items I browsed through today must have inflicted their color schemes upon my psyche. (Sounds better than "I just liked these colors, right?)

Shells and swags

I've been in a black and white sketching mood lately, interested in line effects more than color effects for some reason. Pen, approx. 5" x 7".

Before sleek "modern" fondant-covered cakes took over in popularity in this country about 20 years ago, wedding cakes often looked like this elaborately floral, ruffled, swagged and tulled confection. There is something to be said for this style, though it does not appeal to many brides today. It takes a skilled cake decorator to do elaborate piping work such as this (and I find piping work a lot of fun, myself). It is a very romantic look that screams "bridal." As with so much in fashion, perhaps this look will come back in a few years, too!

Fancy tassel

This very expensive looking Victorian tassel caught my eye in a book, so I did my best to replicate it two-dimensionally. Pen on sketchbook paper, approx. 5"x8 1/2". Sketching intricate items like this is very satisfying to me, it's equivalent to the finer side of doodling. With more time it would have been nice to add a light watercolor wash, but the 20 minutes were up.

Sneak peek...

These are two very small details from a larger piece I was working on tonight. The whole piece took me longer than 20 minutes to complete, probably 2 hours, so it's not part of the 20 minute daily challenge. But it's a special piece, and I am happy with it. Check back in about a week to see the whole thing!
