Plein Air Planter

I don't always get the opportunity to paint "en plein air" (outside), but when I do, it's great - sunlight and bright colors, plus lots of natural subject matter to pick from. This planter is one of several I have with interesting color combinations. I just love its rust-colored coleus, juxtaposed with the peachy petunias and the little feathery purple flowers (not sure of their name). Watercolor, 5 1/2" x 7 1/2".

Mermaid's bouquet

This 20-minute lovely mermaid was inspired by some 18th-century folk art, where mermaids were a very popular theme (somewhat surprisingly). Pencil, pen and watercolor, 5 1/2" x 8".

All You Need is Love

Intricate lace doodling inspired by some very delicate frosting piping (on a cake). Pen, approx. 4 1/2" square. Love is a beautiful thing; in color, in black and white, and even shades of gray.

Everybody wants a rock...

Yes, it's a rock. Looking closely at a rock, you'll see it's not gray, it's about a million colors. Amazingly deceiving. This was another adventure with my water-soluble crayons, those wonderful little marvels. I sketched this on wet paper, then rendered the colors as if they were colored pencil. Then once the colors were in place, went back in with the water and a brush, and moved color around here and there, adding the background and so on. LOVE the result. What do you think?

Buckets of Blooms

These little buckets of flowers on our deck have been soaking up the sunshine the last few days. Their bright saturated colors were enjoyable to paint (watercolor, 5 1/2" x 8"). I love purples, but they are not easy colors to mix! Fun 20 minute challenge here.

Ancient doorway

Inspired by some "old-school" architecture here (watercolor, 5 1/2" x 8"). Painting this delightful paradox: natural objects taken and fashioned into something orderly and purposeful by humans, yet they remain in a natural setting. Another excuse for me to use a nice earth tone color palette, too!

Little frog

This little guy hopped across our path one day and was so well hidden in the leaves I had a better time finding him in my photo! Sketching and painting wildlife is real interesting; the close inspection makes you aware of their patterns, shapes, textures and other nuances. Even the smallest details of creation are amazing in their complexity. Watercolor, 5 1/2" x 8".
