Mock Orange Bouquet

More experimentation with my watercolors and watersoluble crayon (and a little pen),
5 1/2" x 7". This bouquet of mock-orange flowers is very fragrant, lovely, and delicate. But I wanted to paint them boldly, to get the variety of greens and yellows in there and still retain an idea of how nicely shaped the blossoms are.

Gorgeous Planter

A recent visit to a greenhouse overflowing with beautiful baskets and plentiful planters was a feast for the eyes! I snapped a bunch of pictures, and this planter was painted from one of them (watercolor and watersoluble crayon, 5 1/2" x 7"). Even with all the colors available in my palette, I just can't capture the true vibrancy of this flower combination. But I sure do enjoy trying!

Daisy Day

Bright and joyful, a daisy for a good day. Messing with color and line to get a happy result (pen, watercolor, watersoluble crayons, 5 1/2" x 8"). I just love these watersoluble crayons and keep experimenting with them!

Red Chair sketch

I am one of those weird people that really likes scenic wallpaper as well as toile fabric, and in every color, but especially red. This sketch just came from the idea of some colonial-style landscape wallpaper (or mural) and then I had to add the chair and rest of the wall to make it look complete. It was probably a little less than 20 minutes but close enough. Pen, 5" x 7".

Pink Stone Ring

I haven't sketched anything sparkly like jewelry yet, I don't think. With over 100 20-minute sketches logged by now, it's getting harder to keep track! Several contemporary realists and photorealists specialize in jewelry, makeup and other feminine accoutrements as their favored subjects, so this is my humble shot at it. The color of the stone in this ring is almost exactly the color I achieved with the paint (watercolor, approx. 3" x 4"). Rendering silver on black cloth was like painting in black and white, very few other colors were reflected. That's something I would remedy with a colored cloth if I do a similar subject again.

Cool Cones

Today was a beautiful day here weather-wise, and thoroughly enjoyable all around. How to convey simple joy in a 20 minute sketch? Ice cream cones, of course (pencil and watercolor, 5" x 8"). Granted, neither "Superhero" nor "Cotton Candy" would be my first choice of flavor, but for a little kid - ice cream heaven.

Take Me Out to the Ballgame!

A gorgeous night for a baseball game - and our team even won! My 20 minute sketch (above, in pen, 5" x 7") inspired my brother to give this 20 minute sketching thing a try. (His sketch below). He is certainly no novice to sketching, but had never tried a timed sketch before. Pretty good, right?

You can see how, even though we were sitting right next to each other, there are some interesting differences in perspective and detail. Regardless, we both successfully captured the essence of the stadium, the fans, and most of all, the game in progress. I highly encourage anyone to try sketching for 20 minutes, you never know what you can accomplish. It makes the time fly by!
